Magic schools are critical in defining a mage’s personality and lifestyle. They determine if a mage will spend his years fighting, researching, healing or all manner of other practices. While a Changer may find his place at the front lines of a battle, swinging sword beside his spells, an Illusionist may spend her life sneaking about, living a grand life of masquerades.
Schools are tremendously difficult to master, and a magi will not be able to use the spells of a school without being first trained in that school. Because of this degree of difficulty and the role they play in a mage’s life, it is extremely important to choose one’s magic school carefully.
Mechanics wise, a mage may have up to 6 points of specialization (determined by intelligence and Magic Power skill level). Having a magic school requires 1 point of specialization in that school. This will grant the mage access to all Tier I spells. Devoting more specialization points to the school will grant higher levels spells. A mage may devote up to 3 specialization points to a single school (note: Tier III has not been implemented).
A mage may be a member of two specialized schools, and the common magic school. A mage can start with up to one specialized school, and the common magic school (this is chosen through backgrounds during character forging). It is highly recommended that mages do not rely upon having a second school from the start, as learning a new school can take up to 2 months (real life time).
Below are some descriptions of the magic schools, created by members of those schools. Remember, all schools (except common school) have opposed school. A mage cannot be a member of two opposing schools. Other schools have some requirements and prerequisites, so make you have all that is needed for your school. Please review the list, and choose wisely!
(Reminder: Mages will not start with magic schools unless they take the backgrounds. Mages also require Magery (to cast spells), Magic Power (for specialization points, spell points and increasing effectiveness), Conjurations (for controlling backlash) and Meditation (for replenishing mana reserves).)
These schools do not fit into the traditional, Zealan/Mercian scheme for magical schools
