Carpentry is the art of taking simple wood and creating much more complicated items, using a variety of tools. Carpentry is one of the biggest collection of craftable items. People of this craft aren’t as high in demand as Blacksmiths, but are very popular, nonetheless.
The largest and most profitable aspect of Carpentry is furniture. It’s common for players to spend thousands of gold decorating their homes. Here’s a list of things you can create:
Chests, crates, and barrels used to store items. These are always in demand and easily sold on vendors. All containers can also be named via the command .namecontainer. This requires no skill or gems to do.
There are many different paintings and portraits one can craft. Often used to fill up those dreadful blank spaces on your walls. Aside from requiring logs to make, they also need a fair amount of cloth and the paints tool. These items can be specialized by using .nameitem and an amount of cut gems. You can also use .setdescription on them.
There’s much, much more to be made with Carpentry. Things like tools, staves, and musical instruments.
There are also two unseen elements of Carpentry. The first of which pairs up with Tinkering to install locks on doors and containers. The better skill you have, the more of a difficulty bonus your locks get when thieves try to pick them. But the better the lock, the harder it is to install.
To install a lock, first you need a lock and a key (both made with Tinkering). Stand next to the door or container you wish to lock. Double-click the lock, you should then be prompted to select a key for the lock. Choose either a blank key or a key that already belongs to another lock so that the one key will unlock both locks. After selecting the key, you will then be asked to select the thing you wish to install the lock on. Your success depends on the complexity of the lock and your skill as a carpenter. If you fail, you will lose the lock.
The second aspect is house repairing. Instead of paying in gold to upkeep your home, you can use your skill as a carpenter to fix everything good as new. To repair a home, you must double-click the house sign, and click the crescent arrow button. Under the section for paying your upkeep in gold is the manual upkeep. There will be amounts listed for stone (needs Mining), large boards (needs Woodworking), and nails (made with ingots by Blacksmiths), depending on how much upkeep needs to be done. To restore the home, have the amount of materials listed and click the option ‘restore house’. If you do not see the manual upkeep option in your home, you do not have enough skill in Carpentry.
See the Woodworking guide for a list of all the different woods you can get.
If you’re going to have Carpentry, you’d better have Woodworking, or you won’t make much of anything. See the Woodworking skill guide for information on gathering logs. You will also need a wide variety of tools, most of which you will start out with. There’s quite a few of them. Hammers, nails, saws, and chisels for example. If the number of tools has your head hurting, try buying or making a heavy toolkit. And as always, a good crafter will make spares of all his tools before doing anything.
