Fishing

Fishing is not so much a crafting skill as it is a gathering skill similar to mining. Its a relatively inexpensive skill (cost: 1bp) that has some fun twists and turns. What pirate cant resist being a fisherman? It can be an interesting past time and an easy way to gather food to sell. Don’t expect to find too much business, but fishing does have some interesting perks.

Catching Fish

There are two ways to catch fish. If you’re an inexperienced fisher, you can only use a fishing pole (crafted with Woodworking). Have one in hand, double-click it, and cast out into any form of water. You can keep doing this until the area becomes scarce of fish (usually after 3-4 casts).

The second method to catch fish for experienced fishermen is by using a net (crafted with Tailoring). It’s a passive skill, all you do is cast your net into an area of water and walk away. A deed will be generated in you backpack for your net. While you leave it set fish will swim over it and random things will get stuck inside of your net. The longer you leave your net out the more you will catch. When you finally need your catch, go to where you set your net and double-click the deed. You’ll pull in your net and a whole lot of fish, shells, and maybe even treasure maps will be dumped into your backpack.

The following is a list of items you can catch with fishing. All of these items can be used with cooking (or for decoration), aside from maps.

  • Small fish
  • Large fish
  • Squid
  • Seashells
  • Coral snakes
  • Treasure maps (nets only)

Uses

As mentioned before, most of what you catch can be used with cooking. To carve a fish, double-click a knife and then click a fish. Its better though to try and sell un-carved fish. In the case of squid, it is possible to use them to make ink bottles. Shells can be used in some recipes or they can be used for decorative purposes.

Treasure Maps

Fishing offers an easy way to gather some of the rarest maps for treasure. The only other method in game for finding treasure maps is hunting very dangerous monsters. Thus, fishing seems the nice, calm alternative to losing your neck. The higher your skill in fishing the more likely you are to pull up a map.

Getting Started

As fishing isn’t much of a business, you may find it hard to actually sell what you catch. Fishing is best paired with cooking so you can cook and sell you catches. However, it is possible to befriend a cook and sell your fish to him. Once you have the skill to gather maps it should be easy to sell them to known treasure hunters at moderately good prices. You’ll have to figure out those prices yourself.
