Tailoring is, by far, the more popular skill among the crafts. Still not as profitable as Blacksmithy, but just as needed. Everybody needs clothing, after all. The market for clothing, while very much in demand, isn’t very profitable because there are many tailors. It is, however, a small but steady source of income.
There is a ton of clothing to be had. Clothing can be equiped by clicking and dragging a piece of clothing from your pack on to your PD (Paper Doll). If it won’t let you equip an item that means you already have something on that layer of your paper doll.
Here’s a list of some of the clothing you’ll find in Tailoring:
Tailors can make more different kinds of armor than blacksmiths can. All useful depending on your character.
There are six different kinds of armor that tailors can make:
These just require lots and lots of hides and cured hides.
Studdead leather requires studs made from ingots by blacksmiths as well as many hides.
Rings made from ingots by blacksmiths are needed to forge ringmail.
Bone armor requres, you guessed it, bones. Bones can be gotten by carving many different animals and monsters around the world.
Splint armor needs furs and scales. Scales can be found when .carving certain creatures like drakes, scarabs, and lizards types. They can also be crafted from metal by blacksmiths.
Padded armor is the simplest form of armor. These require only thread, cloth, and raw fibers like wool and cotton to create.
Containers made with Tailoring mostly consist of backpacks, bags, and pouches. There are also equippable containers that tailors can make. These are back scabbards, side scabbards, and arrow quivers. If you should put arrows inside your quiver, remember to remove them to your pack before trying to use your bow.
Like other containers, these can be named using the command .namecontainer, and do not require any skill or gems to do so.
There are far too many other items in Tailoring to list here. Just some examples are: bandages, rugs, pillows, fishing nets, saddles, tapestries, and banners. Take the time to explore the many things there are to this skill.
The primary materials of Tailoring is, of course, cotton and wool. Cotton is gathered from cotton plants on farms using the Farming skill. Wool is gathered by double-clicking a knife, then clicking a sheep. Cotton and wool is then used to create thread and yarn, which is made by standing next to a spinning wheel (made with Carpentry) and typing .craft thread and .craft yarn. Thread is used to create cloth, which can be done by standing next to a loom (also made with Carpentry) and typing .craft cloth.
Thread, yarn, and cloth can also be made from furs. Furs can be found in different colors on bears, gargun, and several other monsters. One can also get spiders silk, which can be procured from spider monsters by carving them, or by an alchemist who can forage for them. Silk thread, yarn, and cloth have their own stack.
Another important material for tailors are hides. These are used to make a variety of items like leather armor, studded leather armor, shoes, bags, and backpacks. There are many different kinds of hides in many different colors and quality. Normal hides are the most common, and can be found on many animals and monsters. For better quality, one must kill creatures such as giants, drakes, sandworms, and trolls, to name a few. Also, many different items, like armors that blacksmiths make, will require cured hides made with this skill. To make cured hides, stand next to a curing rack (made with Carpentry), and type .craft curedhide.
The necessary tools for any tailor are a sewing kit, scissors, and a knife. To start making clothing go to a farm with lots of cotton if you have Cooking/Farming, or find some sheep to shear. Once you’ve gathered your fiber, you need a spinning wheel and a loom. Both of these can be found in the craft halls of each city. First use the spinning wheel to make thread or yarn, then use the loom to make cloth. Clothing such as robes and cloaks, will require you use yarn instead of cloth.
If you have clothing you don’t wish to use anymore, it can either be recycled using the command .dismantle. Any clothing made from cloth, including bolts of cloth themselves, can also be cut up using scissors to create bandages. Simply double-click the scissors then click the item to have it cut up.
